Muktinath is the most sacred Hindu site in Nepal after the temple of Pashupatinath in Kathmandu. Hindu pilgrims come here to bathe in the 108 water sprouts shaped as cows’ heads and Buddhists come here to pay homage at a shrine enclosing an eternal blue flame. Pilgrims take bath in holy water spouts to purify their bodies before visiting the main Temple. Known for both Hindus and Bhuddists, this shrine attracts pilgrims during the months of May to November. Visitors can enjoy magnificent views of the Himalayas, fabulous and typical valley of Kaligandaki and diversity of ethnic culture.

The Buddhists call Chuming- Gyatsa it which in Tibetan means 'Hundred Waters'. For Tibetan Buddhists, Muktinath Chuming Gyatsa is a very important place of Dakinis, goddesses known as Sky Dancers and one of the 24 Tantric places. They understand the murti to be a manifestation of Avalokitesvara. Legend told that the Tibetan Buddhist tradition states that for this reason Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, had meditated at Muktinath on his way to Tibet.

The scripts narrating the importance of this temple is available in Vishnu puran with the Gantaki Mahathmya. The water way downstream from Muktinath along Kali Gandaki is the source of all Silas or Shaligrams that are required to establish a temple of Vishnu anywhere in the world. It is considered to be one of the holiest places of pilgrimage of Hindues, Buddhists and Vaishnavas. It has 108 water springs and this number carries great significance in Eastern philosophy. In Hindu astrology, there are 12 zodiac or Rashi and 9 planets or Graha, giving a total of 108 combination. Also there are 27 Lunar mansions which are divided in 4 quarters or Padas each giving a combination of 108 Padas in total.

The trekking trail from Jomsom passes along the Kali Gandaki River, the deepest gorge in the world to Kagbeni, a fascinating old citadel. The trail then divides into four directions of which the east route leads to Muktinath. The trail down from Muktinath via Ekle Bhatti (single teahouse) meets with the one coming from Kagbeni and then you walk into the Kaligandaki gorge visiting Marpha, which is well known for garden of apples, apricots and peaches sold fresh, dry and as distilled liquor brandy and its narrow lanes of cobbled stones with houses painted in white on each side. The trek route begins from Pokhara and flies out from Jomsom. Alternatively, the trek commences from Jomsom and trek out to Pokhara.

This trip can be done using vehicle & minimum walking as proposed in this tour apart from trekking in the region.

After breakfast departure to Pokhara and transfer you to the hotel. Spend afternoon at your leisure, either in shopping or roaming about in the colorful bazaar of the city. Overnight at the hotel in Pokhara

Day 04: POKHARA (820 M) -NAYAPUL (1070 M) /TIRKHEDHUNGA (1540 M)

After breakfast meet your Guide and porters at Hotel in Pokhara. We drive to Nayapul- 41 km which takes approximately one and half hour. Then we proceed on trek towards Birethanti (1065 m) which is located on the opposite bank of Modi Khola. There is a large and prosperous town with a winding street paved with large stones. After immediately leaving the main street of Birethanti we pass through a large waterfall and swimming hole and our trail stays on the north bank of the Hurungdi Khola on a fairly level up to Sudame (1340 m) Village. Your lunch will be here at Sudame. Three and half hour time. After Sudame, the trail climbs steadily up the side of the valley about 45 minutes to reach the Tirkhedhunga village. O/N at Lodge in Tirkhedhunga. 4-5 hours walk.

Day 05: TIRKHEDHUNGA (1540 M) / GHOREPANI (2750 m)

Today after crossing over the Burungdi River on a large bridge at 1410 m, the trail immediately climbs very steeply up to the large Magar Village of Ulleri (1960 m). As we climb, the tops of Annapurna South (7219 m), Hiunchuli (6441), begin to merge from behind the hills. After Ulleri, the trail climbs gently through pastures and cultivated fields. The fields soon give way to deep forest as the trail climbs to Banthanti (2300 m) where we stop for our lunch at the local restaurant. We can see the view of Gangapurna (7454 m) and Fish Tail (6993 m). Beyond the village of Banthanti , there are magnificent oak and rhododendron forest. From here, Ghorepani is reached in about 3 hours past some sparkling clear streams and some teashops. O/N at local lodge in Ghorepani. 6 hours walk.

Day 06: GHOPREPANI TO TATOPANI (1190 m)

The trail descends steeply to Chitre (2390 m), where there are more lodges. From here the hills are extensively terraced as the trail drops down through Sikha, a large village with shops and hotels at 1980 m, and then descends gently to Ghara (1700 m). A further steep descent of 380 m takes you to Ghar Khola on a suspension bridge and then climbs up above the Kali Gandaki before crossing that too.

Turning north the trail soon reached Tatopani (1190 m), It’s a busy population centre, although a monsoon flood in the late 1980s washed away a number of logdes and bathing pools, and the remainder of the village sits precariously on a shelf above the river. Tatopani offers some of the best food along the whole trail. Tatopani is a popular destination for a shorter trek out of Pokhara. At the south end of the village is the trail to the hot springs and a police checkpost. 6-7 hours walk

Day 07: TATOPANI TO GHASA (2010 m)

The trail now follows the Kali Gandaki valley to Jomsom. The river cuts a channel between the peaks of Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri, thus qualifying the Kali Gandaki for the title of the world’s deepest valley. The two 8000 m-plus mountaintops are only 38 km apart and the river flows between them at a height of less than 2200 m.

The Kali Gandaki valley is home to the Thakalis, an ethnic group noted for their trading and business expertise, particularly in running hotels and lodges, not only here in their homeland but also in Pokhara and elsewhere in Nepal.

The trail continues to climb to the water fall of Rupse Chhahara (1560 m) and at one stage takes a precarious route through a steep, narrow section of the gorge. A suspension bridge crosses the river at 1620 m and the trail crosses back again at 1880 m, then through Ghasa, the first Thakali Village (2120 m). 5 hours walk.

Day 08: GHASA TO LARJUNG (2550 m)

A steep climb through forest takes you to the Lete Khola, then to the village of Lete (2430 m), with a superb view of the eastern flank of Dhaulagiri, and finally to Kalopani (2530 m). Kalopani has great mountain views and some comfortable lodges to view them from.

From Kalopani the trail crosses to the east side of the Kali Gandaki, before crossing back again at Larjung. This village at 2550 m has interesting alleyways and turnels between the houses, an attempt to avoid the fierce winds that often whistle up the Kali Gandaki valley. 4 hours walk.

Day 09: LARJUNG TO JOMSOM (2670 m)

Khobang (2560 m) is a village with a gompa above it, and the mountain views on this stretch are the best to be seen.

Tukuche (2590 m) is one of the most important Thakali villages, once a meeting place for traders from Tibet . Despite the growth of tourism in this area, Tukuche is still a quieter, smaller place than it was during this era of trade.

From here the landscape changes as you enter the drier and more desert like country north of the Himalayan watershed. It also gets windier, gentle breezes from the north shift to a gale from the south as the morning wears on. Marpha virtually huddles behind a ridge to keep out of the wind. The village also has some of the most luxurious accommodation to be found along the trail, which makes it a good alternative to staying in Jomsom. A government project between Tukuche and Marpha produces fruit and vegetables for the whole region.

The trail continues along the valley side, rising gradually before crossing over a low ridge to Jomsom (2710 m), the major centre in the region and it has facilities such as a hospital, an ACAP visitor centre and a police checkpost. This is the last of the Thakali villages, those further north are inhabited by people of Tibetan descent. 6-7 hours walk

Day 10: JOMSOM TO MUKTINATH (3800 m)

It’s worth following the trail along the river all the way to the medieval-looking village of Kagbeni (2800 m). This Tibetan influenced settlement has a number of good lodges, and is as close a syou can get to Lo Manthang, the capital of the legendary kingdom of Mustang further to the north. There is a recently built bridge and trail up the west bank of the Kali Gandaki, which provides an alternative to the original trail up the east bank.

From Kagbeni the path climbs steeply to rejoin the direct trail leading to Khingar (3200 m). The trail climbs through a desert landscape then past meadows and streams to the village of Jharkot (3550 m). A further climb brings you to Ranipauwa (3700 m), the accommodation area of Muktinath.

Muktinath is a pilgrimage centre for Buddhist and Hindus. You will see Tibetan traders as well as sadhus (holy men) from as far away as the south of India . 8 hours walk.
